The following has been sent to local press and TV and to Brass Band publications. Press Release112 year old champion seeks new home Bedford Town Band has had to stop using the rehearsal room it has had since 2000. The band had been fighting a noise abatement notice served by the council after a complaint from a neighbouring house. Acting on legal advice and case history from recent legislation the band decided it had no choice but to withdraw from the case. The various groups that make up the Bedford Town Band now have to rehearse at a number of different venues, and the band is very grateful for the support offered by the local schools that have accommodated them. However, this has increased the costs to the band, giving an annual financial deficit. The lack of a single facility limits the activities of the band. The band does not have an ideal base to store its considerable library and all its percussion instruments; access to music and equipment for rehearsals in different venues can prove difficult. It takes considerable logistics to ensure the right equipment is at the right place. Originally set up on the suggestion of Bedford Town Council, Bedford Town Band has been in existence for 112 years and is proud to remain an independent self financing organisation. The Bedford Town Band is actually an organisation consisting of four different ensembles catering for a range of different abilities of player aged from 10 to 81. The contesting band has recently secured its return to the championship section. Bedford Town Band has a long record of contributing to the local community, not just through performances and as an outlet for local brass players of all ages, but also in its support of charities, work with local schools and music groups, providing and supporting concerts, master-classes and working with young composers. The band has represented Bedford playing around the country and abroad including Bedford’s twin town of Bamberg. The Town Band’s long term aim has to be to find a permanent home to bring all its groups back under one roof. This would secure and maintain its music making in the local community from its grass root support and development of young players, through to its representation of Bedford at championship level.
